Born and brought up in London he started
playing drums at an early age with rock groups during the early 60’s.
Nurturing an underlying leaning towards Modern Jazz and very much inspired at
that time by the likes of the Modern Jazz Quartet, Dave Brubeck, Oscar Petersen,
Jimmy Smith, Ronnie Scott, Tubby Hayes, John Dankworth and Dudley Moore, and so
many others; became frustrated due to lack of opportunity to develop in that
direction and stopped playing drums to pursue a career elsewhere. However he
never lost the interest in jazz and continued to enjoy it at a distance for many
years.
Whilst working in Dublin during the late 90’s, rekindled an interest in playing
drums but this time around, finding the opportunity to take things forward
within a jazz context.
Having returned to work in the UK and with formal tuition being available
locally, started back along the long road to develop better knowledge,
understanding and ability with the drumset.
Well two out of three is not bad, so he’ll continue to battle with the problem
of ability – probably for evermore, because you never stop learning and striving
to improve.
